A grateful family shares its story

It is hard to express the blessings of nearly 20 years. Matthew's medical condition is so rare that the medical community has been learning from his challenges throughout his young life. He has been a tester patient since he was four years old. Over the years, Matthew has shown an incredible fighting spirit to survive his medical journey.

We were so grateful when the Ronald McDonald Family Room at Memorial Children's Hospital opened in South Bend. It meant that we could stay locally for more of his care and, because he was critical most of the time, leaving the hospital was just next to impossible. Matt's dream of walking across the stage at graduation with his class in 2010 was made possible when the RMHC staff assisted in arranging ambulance transportation.

After 16 years, doctors now know what is wrong with Matthew's digestive tract and, sadly, we have been told that there is no cure to date.

We almost lost Matthew nine times over the years and have spent all of his life at numerous hospital stays both at Memorial Hospital and Mayo Clinic. Each time, we have been blessed to have the Ronald McDonald Family Room volunteers and staff embrace us.

Thank you for your support over the years! Without you, we would have not been able to be there for our son in such a meaningful way. We will NEVER forget what you have meant to our family as we've taken this long medical journey together. This charity is so important to the families you touch each day, and through the years we have met and supported other families who were beginning their medical journeys.
